'Karel Appel Was Hier', Karel Appelhuis, Dapperstraat 7, Amsterdam

2006-2010

On the third of May 2006, Karel Appel died. Appel was one of the Netherlands' most famous artists and was born at the Dapperstraat, Amsterdam in 1921.
Artist Martijn Sandberg was approached by the Key in order to create a sign for the fašade of the planned Karel Appel House at Dapperstraat 7.
Sandberg has made a bronze artwork in the form of a half eaten golden coloured apple. The text 'Karel Appel Was Hier' ('Karel Appel Was Here') has been bitten out of the apple.
The gable sign is mounted in 2010 after the renovation of the fašade. The Karel Appel House is made available to artists from home and abroad, working at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam, for use as a temporary dwelling.
